Government of Canada Announces $5,000 Incentive for Electric Vehicle Purchase

19 Mar 2019

As part of the Government of Canada’s 2019 federal budget, Canadian consumers will be eligible for the a $5,000 incentive towards the purchase of battery electric vehicles with a retail price of less than $45,000. While Québec, Ontario, and British Columbia have offered EV incentives in the past, this is the first nation-wide EV incentive in Canada.

The purpose of the incentive is to make it easier and more affordable for Canadians to choose zero-emissions vehicles. Canada has a target to ensure 10% of new car sales are electric by 2025, 30% by 2030, and 100% by 2040.

Electric vehicles provide a modern alternative to traditional gasoline vehicles. They are quieter, safer, and far more energy efficient than internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. EVs also have the positive externalities of improving air quality and cutting greenhouse gas emissions. The Government of Canada estimates that 14,400 premature deaths per year in Canada can be linked to air pollution.

In addition to rebates for consumers, the 2019 budget announced that battery and plug-in electric vehicles purchased by businesses will be eligible for a full tax-write off in the year they are put in use.
